Bread Sweet/Halwa

A tasty dessert to indulge in - Bread slices fried in ghee and cooked in sweetened milk, garnished with fried nuts and raisins.

Ingredients:

4 slices bread

ghee : 1 /2 cup to fry bread, 1 /2 cup to cook along with milk and powder

1 cup milk powder or 1 cup kova

1 cup milk

1 cup sugar

10 almonds (grind to a paste with a little water)

For Garnish:

2 tbsps ghee

1 tbsp cashews

1 tbsp slivered almonds

1 tbsp raisins

1 tbsp sarap paruppu

1 tbsp melon seeds


Preparation:

  • Heat ghee and fry bread slices until brown.Set aside.
  • In a pan heat some ghee.Take it off the heat and stir in the milk powder.
  • (if using kova – add it after the bread slices cook in milk)
  • Add the milk and sugar, mix well and bring to a boil.
  • Add the almond paste and stir till bubbling.
  • Add in the fried bread pieces and cook it in the milk.
  • Stir till the mixture thickens.(It will look gooey but will be fine when it cools)
  • Garnish with fried nuts.Serve warm or cold.

Garnish:

Heat the ghee and fry all or a few of the ingredients under “Garnish”.

Pour over the halwa.


Tips:

An occasional rich dessert is OK :-), but for those of you who want to reduce the amount of ghee in this recipe, apply ghee to bread slices and just toast them until crisp and brown instead of frying it.
