Ven Pongal

A very traditional South Indian rice preparation that is made for breakfast. A very popular dish in most South Indian hotels.

Ingredients:

1 Cup Ponni raw rice or any rice
1/2 Cup Split moong dhal
1 Sprig curry leaves
1 1/2 Tsp Jeera
1 Tbsp Black pepper
1 Tbsp Ghee or butter
8 Cashews
1/2 " Ginger sliced
Salt to taste

Preparation:


  • Fry moong dhal in a pan till golden and pressure cook with rice & salt.
  • Heat ghee or butter in a pan.
  • Add ginger and fry for few seconds.
  • Add pepper and when they crackle add jeera, cashews & curry leaves.
  • Fry till cashews are golden.
  • Pour this over cooked rice & moong dhal and mix.

Tips:

Pongal can be made directly in the pressure cooker by heating butter
& frying ginger, jeera, pepper, cashews, curry leaves & moong dhal.
To this add rice, water & salt. Cook till done.
