Chicken Gravy / Koli Aanam

Chicken pieces simmered in a rich coconut milk gravy.A dish I make almost every other week.Great with ghee rice.

Ingredients:

1 lb chicken

1 large onion chopped

1 tomato chopped

3 tbsps chopped coriander leaves

3 tbsps chopped mint leaves

1 tsp ginger garlic paste

1 tsp coriander powder

1 /2 tsp chili powder

1 /4 tsp turmeric

3 cardamoms

2 cloves

3 pieces cinnamon

1 cup coconut milk

1 cup water

2 tbsps oil

salt to taste


Preparation:

  • Heat oil.
  • Add the chopped onions,whole spices,mint & coriander leaves and salt and cook till translucent.
  • Add the ginger garlic paste and fry till lightly browned.
  • Add the tomatoes ,chili,coriander and turmeric powders.Mix well and cook till tomatoes are soft.
  • Add the chicken pieces and 1 cup of water.Bring to a boil.Reduce heat ,cover and let it simmer till the chicken is well cooked.
  • Remove lid, add the coconut milk and simmer for about 3 mins.
  • Serve with rice or chappathis.


Tips:

1.Add potato pieces along with the chicken if desired.Note: that you will have to season liberally with salt when adding potatoes.

2.Pressure cook for a quick gravy.

Hanneda, i tried this yesterday for appam.It tasted soooo good. The mint leaves gives a nice flavor to the dish.

Thank U Ahila! This gravy does taste good with aappam, idiappam, dosa, parota, rice, chapathi etc. etc.

You will find the recipe for "Vattalappam" under 'Sweets and Desserts'!! That is def. one of my favorites .As for Thakkadi, wow, I remember eating it when we go to our hometown for the holidays...soooo delicious.....Havent had that in atleast 10 yrs now!! and have never tried making it either! Will ask around and try to get the recipe for u.In the meantime, if u get hold of the recipe, do share it with all of us.Pl. register on the site if u havent already registered.

Athiya, if you want to make the aanam more spicy - add more red chili powder OR add some fresh green chilies.As for the jeera powder - you can def. try adding some though it will change the flavor of this gravy.If you want to thicken the gravy, add a bit more coriander powder and some ground cashew nuts.Hope this helped.
