Coconut Chutney

Spicy ground coconut topped with fried seasoning – a quick and simple accompaniment for idlis, dosas or vadas.

Ingredients:

2 cups grated coconut

3 – 6 green chilies (according to taste)

1 tbsp pottu kadalai/ dalia/ roasted chick peas (optional)

1 tsp mustard seeds

1 tbsp urad daal (yellow lentil)

2 dry red chilies

5-6 curry leaves

Salt to taste

2 tbsps oil

Preparation:

  • Grind the coconut , dalia (optional) and green chilies with salt in the food processor or blender , until smooth - Use very little water.
  • Transfer to a serving bowl.
  • Heat oil in a small pan.
  • Add the mustard seeds, urad dal, curry leaves and dry red chilies.
  • When it crackles, remove from heat and pour over the coconut.
  • Serve with hot idlis, dosas or vadas!

Tips:

1. Add mint or coriander leaves to the chutney for additional flavor.

2. Always keep a bag of frozen grated coconut in your freezer- Chutney can be prepared anytime!
