Fish gravy

Growing up, we've eaten this delicious fish gravy umpteen number of times - simple & quick to make & the slight tanginess from the tamarind is perfect.

Ingredients:

1 lb fish - medium pieces

1 onion - thinly sliced

1 tomato - chopped

2 tsps coriander powder

1 pinch turmeric powder

1/ 2 tsp chili powder

2 green chilies

3 curry leaves

1 /4 tsp mustard seeds

1/ 4 tsp cumin/ jeera seeds

1 pinch - fenugreek / methi seeds

1 tbsp oil

2 tbsps chopped coriander/ cilantro leaves

1 tsp tamarind pulp (add more according to taste)

1 /2 cup coconut milk

1 ½ - 2 cups water

Preparation:

  • Heat oil.
  • Add the mustard seeds, fenugreek ,jeera seeds and curry leaves.
  • When it crackles add the onions with a bit of salt and cook till soft.
  • Add the tomato,green chilies , coriander, chili and turmeric powders.
  • Cover and let it simmer till tomatoes are cooked.
  • Add about 1 ½ cups of water ,tamarind and bring to a boil.
  • Lower the heat, add the fish ,cover and simmer till fish is cooked.
  • Add the coconut milk and cook for 2 mins.
  • Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with white rice or chapathis.

Tips:

Any type of fish would work well for this fish preparation.
