Meen Kolumbu (Fish Curry)

Traditional South Indian fish curry. I learnt this dish from my sister-in-law Sudha.

Ingredients:

1 lb Fish (Steak cut)
1 1/2 Cups chopped Shallots
10 Garlic
1" Ginger chopped
1 Tomato chopped
1/4 Tsp Mustard Seeds
1/2 Tsp Methi Seeds/Fenugreek seeds
1 Tsp Chilli Powder
1 Tbsp Coriander Powder
1/4 Tsp Turmeric Powder
1/2 Tsp Garam Masala Powder
Lemon sized Tamarind
1/2 Cup - 3/4 Cup Coconut Paste
Few Curry Leaves
2 Tbsp Oil
Salt to taste

Preparation:
  • Soak tamarind in 1 cup water for an hour.Squeeze and discard the pulp.
  • Heat oil in pan and add mustard.
  • Once it crackles add methi.Fry for few seconds
  • Add garlic, chopped ginger and shallots.
  • Fry till soft and add curry leaves and tomato.
  • Fry till oil floats on top.
  • Add chilli powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder and garam masala powder.
  • Cook in low flame for 10 minutes.
  • Add tamarind water and cook for 10 more minutes.
  • Add coconut paste along with 2 cups water and salt.
  • Cook in low flame till oil floats on the surface.
  • Finally add fish pieces and cook for half an hour.
  • Serve hot with rice.
