Channa/Chole Masala

Chickpeas cooked in a delicious onion and tomato based gravy.Channa or Chole masala is the perfect wholesome dish for a vegetarian menu. An excellent side for bhaturas and parathas.

Ingredients:

1 cup kabuli channa (soaked overnight) OR 2 (15 0z) cans chickpeas

2 medium onions chopped

6 oz tomato sauce OR 2 tomatoes chopped

3 cloves of garlic minced

2 teaspoons fresh ginger minced

1 tsp coriander powder

1 /2 tsp chili powder

1 tsp cumin/jeera powder

2 tsps garam masala

4 tbsps vegetable oil

salt

For Garnish:

2 tbsps chopped coriander leaves

2 wedges of lemon

2 tbsps chopped onions.

 

Preparation:

  • Pressure cook the channa with salt.(if raw)
  • Drain the canned channa and wash several times.(if canned) Heat oil in a large pan. Add onions with a little salt and cook till translucent.
  • Add the ginger and garlic and cook until browned.
  • Add the chili,coriander, cumin and garam masala ,stir well and cook a few mins till the oil separates.
  • Add the tomato sauce and cook for about 5 mins.
  • Add cooked or canned channa and a cup of water.Mix well,cover and cook for 10-15 mins or until done on medium heat.
  • Serve garnished with chopped coriander,onions and lemon wedges.

Tips:

If using raw channa and you want it to be a one pot meal-do not pressure cook the channa before hand.Heat oil in a pressure cooker,follow the above steps and once the masala is cooked add in the soaked channa and pressure cook till done.

I tried the channa masala recipe with canned dark red kidney beans, because that was what I had in hand. It tastes so good with roti/chappati or even plain white basmati rice. It is so nutritious, easy to make and the whole family enjoyed it. Thank you.
