Baklava is a rich, sweet pastry made of layers of phyllo sheets filled with chopped walnuts and almonds and sweetened with honey syrup. This is a Greek dessert.It is easy to make and is a wonderful pastry to serve at any party.

Ingredients:

1 lb frozen Phyllo sheets(found in freezer section of grocery store)
2 1/2 cups walnuts
2 1/2 cups slivered almonds
1/2 tsp cardamom powder
1/2 cup sugar
2 1/2 sticks unsalted butter melted


For syrup:


3/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup honey
1 cup water
1 tbsp lemon juice


Preparation:
  • Thaw pastry sheets to room temperature.
  • Process walnuts and almonds along with 1/2 cup sugar and cardamom powder in a food processor until they are finely chopped.
  • Transfer this into a bowl.
  • Preheat oven to 350 degree F.
  • Brush 13 x 9 inch baking pan with melted butter and start spreading about 5 sheets one by one brushing each sheet quickly with melted butter as they are layered.
  • Spread a layer of nuts mixture.
  • Top the nuts with 5 sheets of phyllo, brushing each sheet with butter.
  • Spread a layer of nuts mixture.
  • Repeat the procedure. There should be 3 layers of nuts and 4 layers of sheets.
  • Top the final layer of nuts mixture with 5 sheets of phyllo sheets, brushing each sheet with melted butter.
  • Before baking cut Baklava lengthwise into 4 equal sections.
  • Then cut diagonally at 1 1/2 inch intervals to form diamond shapes.
  • Bake for 40-45 minutes or until golden brown.
  • To prepare syrup, combine sugar, honey, water and lemon juice in a saucepan.
  • Bring to a boil.
  • Reduce heat to low and simmer for 20 minutes.
  • Cool the syrup and pour over hot Baklava evenly.
  • Cool completely before serving.

Tips:

Unroll the Phyllo sheets carefully and make sure its thawed to room temperature.
Otherwise it will crumble.
Heat butter in a pan over stove top so that you can keep the butter melted all through the time or can be melted in the microwave.
